Hello guys!
Thing is, in the background, I was working hard to implement a chat solution into the NAS, which now in a state where it would be possible to start running (and testing it).
You do know that whatsapp is getting less and less safe, and it's actually owned by facebook, therefore using whatsapp is getting more dangerous. Wouldn't be surprised if facebook started syphoning into the datastreams, if they haven't started it already.
Therefore, I recommend to completely migrate from whatsapp into our own custom chat application. Before you scream that it will going to be something basic, actually, the looks and functions of it made almost completely identical to whatsapp. The only thing would be that the chat server would be our own NAS. Why I recommend this migration?
- Way more safer. Traffic goes through the NAS, the only one who can see the chat is us, and nobody else. I can look into the messages in an admin level, but it doesn't really matter, as I just read the chat anyway. Therefore, there is not known safer solution that this currently.
- You don't need constant phone connection to use it on PC. And, it also has the android and ios package backed by the Synology NAS, so you can chat from phone too if you want easily.
- You don't need to provide your telephone number! You can use the good old username/password schema.
- No performance hit on the computer or phone. Whatsapp is nasty that it eats up your resources.
- No phone needed. People without phone can also join the chat.
- This program can actually hold every picture and audio/video data of the chat on the server itself, therefore you can choose not to save anything, yet still see them. Or, you can choose to download, and this program can actually save on an SD card too, not just internal memory.
- Every function is identical. Groups can be created, you can set avatar, send pictures, tag people. Apart from this, this software has lots of extra function, like calendar control (if you wish to use).
Of course, everybody should install this piece of software, after I finished scripting it up, on his PC, and phones. After that, it's basically just we create the group, we leave the old one, and join this new one, and we have our very own chat working in place of whatsapp. Because it's almost completely identical, chances you will not really going to feel any change, apart from a quick setup when you change the program.
Now, this needs a coordinated effort to do if we wish to go through with it. I don't know if commanding still works in YATTA, but I would need someone who helps to do this if we do decide to go on with this. Because we either do it, or not do it, giving the chance for everybody to decide not a good idea, because fragmentation. For me, personally, safety on the net is quite important, but I would see it's more important to stay invisible. I also know some people who not happy with providing their phone number for example.
So in short, I don't know how you guys would decide this, but this one needs decision. And if we decided, we need to completely close down the whatsapp side of things, and migrate everyone who is active, and leave messages for those who not to join if they wish. I'm waiting actual written reply from somebody in command in the next 1 week, until 08.24. evening. If you guys feel like you not up to make plans and decide, I will plan it myself after the deadline.
The migration though, if we go through with it, will happen at 2018. december.
