I know this is a rare occurence. I'm definitely sure I rarely write any reviews, for the simple reason I would remember it if I would have done otherwise. The winter season of 2019 had a gem, which defies standards in a new way. And this wasn't a compliment. Girly Air Force managed to trip my breakers so hard, that I decided to write it out from myself.
What is Girly Air Force? In a nutshell, you have super strong, glittering fighter jets called Daughters, all of them to have their designated pilot, a cute, moody girl running by the specimen name of Anima. Of course, you need some kind of alien force, so these girls with their super-planes would have an enemy to fight against, whom casually want to destroy humanity. More girls get introduced as the anime progresses, but one thing never changes: the protagonist, Narutani Kei, who get these girls automatically as his personal harem, because the standards of this kind of anime dictates just that. Through the episodes they interact, fight together against the enemy (between themselves too), and the usual comical-serious tone goes through every episode. Look kinda general on paper, right? It is general, I can tell that. I have expected it after the first episode this to be a nonchalant, fun anime which I can just enjoy without moving my brain cells around too much during dinner. But the truth was a little different, because the anime was so bad I would have rather watched Boku No Pico 100 times, and turn gay.
1st Perkele:
The main guy. The one word which I can define him after watching through all 12 episodes is, that he is dumb. Not like he had a choice in the matter, as the director of the anime apparently fucked the poor boy up completely by making him dumb as hell. I don't know how he managed to fool the creator of the original light novel, although at this point, I have a feeling the novel itself also not that bright, but I cannot really say anything about it, as I haven't read it. Narutani Kei, the main protagonist just has his idea about the world, declaring seemingly deep, philosophic, and important thoughts in a matter of fact that he cannot be wrong. And in this anime, it's true unfortunately. Every single dumb statement about life, about fighting, war, or even love is backed up by the premises of the anime, which gives a complete framework to support him through and through. This is a world where he cannot be wrong, and everybody on his side in this charade. If he says the sky is green, then everybody in there will agree with him, and he will gonna give a long speech about how he gone this far, that he realized this. In the end, he will be really happy and proud for whatever reason, and then you can wait for the next episode.
I hope the above just shows one of the biggest problem with this show. All the girls over him, this one can still considered normal in a harem-like anime, but to bring an example, he flies an INTERCEPTOR PLANE without any training at all, without redout, while the only right technical terms leaving his mouth is FOX, which, at some occasions still wrong, when they shoot ground targets (those who don't know, FOX is a NATO code word used by pilots to signal the using air-to-air weapons. Also, why NATO codewords in Japan? Even having Swedish plane not justifies it, they also not part of NATO. Possible I don't know something right here, but with this anime, I'm paranoic now.). Every other technical term, or even attempt on being smart, or philosophical, hell, even to nice to girls falls short. Every single word just empty, without meaning, and call me high-strung, but listening to this in every episode was a little too much.
2nd Perkele:
While this happens in all kinds of other anime, but with the setup in this anime, the girls also way more unbearable than normally. Given how the main protagonist guy shits into the whole anime, the girls interacting and eventually fawning over him just oil on the fire. We have the generic, clumsy main protagonist girl, who spaces out, weird, and for some reason, the framework of the anime just justifies every mindless communication which wouldn't be possible in any decent anime between the two. Of course, Kei has a sister too, who is (what a surprise) overprotective, and generally angry, and of course, loves his brother very much. The other girls also simply too general, and they not balance out the bad main character. One of the is an annoying blond which wanted to be something like the typical American, while the other girl is like the sworn enemy at the beginning with ego as big as Mount Everest, only to fall into the main character eventually. I don't want to go into more details, because these kind of girls can be found in lots of anime. The problem with the framwork.
3rd Perkele:
The story itself. From beginning to end, give up on understanding what the anime was about. It's not even trying to tell anything, it just goes on like a car without brakes. We have these aliens trying to wipe out humanity, then the cute girl in a Swedish fighter jet with a dumb japanese high school boy as second pilot, and together, they fly into oblivion. I just don't get it, why? Of course, we get more planes and girls, all with their own moody conduct, but the story seems to revolve around these dumb characters, instead the characters revolving around the story. If one of them does something which screams of not being right, cliché, or idiotic, the anime instantly pulls out a scene to justify that action. It's just painful to watch how these characters can do anything they wish. The main character's overstated confidence splashes filth every time on the anime when it could turn better. The main problem with the story, that it's also written by the main character, like lots of things in this anime. When he's really angry with the aliens, and feels like fighting, some shows up, and he shoots them down (and I want you to remember he does it with zero training sitting in a Swedish fighter jet with a non-human overpowered school girl who still managed to pass out while he doesn't). And this forced charade goes into every pores of the story. Lots of scenes also foreboding, but in the end, they never used anywhere else to explain anything, so this basically means they make no sense. The only character, who had hopes of showing something good in the shows, of course, got killed at the last episode, because she just turned into an alien, and bam, the main hero had to kill her, followed by some world-changing truths out from his mouth. What a way to end the show.
I could write way more of course, but I became tired, and I feel like I managed to make my point: don't watch this shitty show, except if you want it for bad reference.
